Bears in Bern

When we visited Bern, we just had to take the kids to see the Bears. They used to be kept in a pit (not a very big one), and it looked so sad. It was such a small space for these creatures. Well, that's how we remembered them from our trip 9 years ago. Now, someone from the Swiss PETA must have put up a fight because these bears have a beautiful habitat. It's a few acres of hillside that slopes down to the river. They've got trees, and fresh river water to swim in, trunks and logs and shade, and the best kind of happiness a caged bear could ask for. On one side you can actually get within 12 inches of a bear, through a cage. If you wanted you could stick your hand in it's mouth, but we're smarter than that.

Bern is also known for it's really cool fountains.... mostly they consist of a statue or artwork on top. This one was surrounded by construction so it was difficult to get a good shot of it, but this is the kid's reactions after seeing it for the first time (unfortunately, we missed the exact moment of realization....but this one isn't too bad):

and this is what they were looking at: an ogre eating babies; one is in it's mouth, one is in it's hand and he is surrounded by Courses 3, 4, & 5.
...thirsty....
